In 2019, the World Health Organization described burnout as an “occupational phenomenon.” We tend to associate burnout with:
- Working hard and playing hard
- That adrenaline rush from always being on the go
- Feelings of inadequacy, that you’re just not getting enough done
However, this is only partly true! While I agree that chronic stress due to work can lead to burnout, I’m living proof that there’s much more going on under the hood. In 2016, I crashed and burned after years of seeing specialist after specialist.
WHAT IS AT THE HEART OF ALL THESE SYMPTOMS?
Burnout is caused by stress – in all of its forms. It takes a toll on your energy, your vitality, and robs you of your sense of happiness and fun! Here’s a breakdown of the different types of stressors:
- Biochemical (foods, hormones, gut infections, viruses etc… )
- Environmental (toxins, pollutants, etc…)
- Physiological (musculo-skeletal)
- Psychological (emotions)
These *H.I.D.D.E.N. stressors weaken the body, and the brain, which can impact the mind, and leave us vulnerable to more than just psychological overwhelm – colds, flus, illness, overeating, erratic hormones, to name a few.
*Hormones, Immune System, Digestion, Detoxification, Energy Production and Nervous System stressors take a toll on your energy and your vitality!
Feeling burnt out goes beyond just lacking in motivation, that can be fixed by a cup of liquid gold. I know, because I tried it and it didn’t work – not for long anyway – and it ALWAYS snowballs into bigger and more complicated health problems if left unchecked – both mental and physical!
