Since the outbreak of the virus, I’ve heard a lot of people say, “Healthy people are getting the virus, too.”
However, I remain dubious about the “no existing health conditions” claim.
As a functional medicine health coach, I know from experience that many people *think* they’re healthy. Then, a closer look at their day-to-day energy levels, eating habits, and lifestyle choices reveals that they’re not as healthy as they assume.
👉 Just because someone doesn’t show symptoms of a disease doesn’t mean their body is balanced—or that their unhealthy habits (known and unknown) aren’t causing problems that have yet to surface.
One example of an unhealthy habit, that many people don’t realize they have, is eating according to what the mainstream media tells us is “healthy”—or following outdated diets.
In fact, I’m always concerned when a prospective client gets on a discovery call and tells me that they eat “healthy.”
What does that mean, exactly?
Typically, I find out that their definition of healthy eating includes little to no fat in their diet and consuming low calories. That’s right out of the 1980s nutrition playbook.
Then, I usually find out that their main sources of health information are mainstream newspapers, magazines, and television.
Another alarm bell goes off when I hear things like, “I’ve been exercising [running / cycling / swimming] for an hour or two every day.” 🛑
Recent studies show that excessive exercise is NOT as healthy as we’ve been led to believe—nor is it an indicator of good health.
When people think that running a marathon or being an Ironman automatically makes them healthy, they’re buying into a myth that’s been perpetuated for far too long.
They don’t yet realise that there is a huge distinction between being healthy and being fit.
Cardiovascular fitness isn’t always synonymous with health. In fact, most endurance athletes have significant amounts of inflammation in their bodies. 🔥
And as we know, inflammation is a precursor to chronic illness and disease.
So my point is this: it’s time for us to redefine our understanding of the word “healthy.”
Most people still think the standard, mainstream-approved way of eating and living is supportive of health.
Meanwhile, their bodies are carrying huge toxic loads from eating a standard western diet and dealing with chronic stress—including over-exercising.
Yes, many people may appear “healthy.” But just because someone hasn’t been ill in a while doesn’t mean their body isn’t out of balance.
And it doesn’t mean that illness isn’t waiting in the wings to be activated by an opportunistic virus, bacteria, etc.
